SIL Translator’s Notes on 2 Kings 17:5

17:5a Then the king of Assyria invaded the whole land,

Then the king of Assyria attacked the whole land ⌊of Israel⌋ .

-or-

King Shalmaneser of Assyria sent his soldiers into all Israel.

17:5b marched up to Samaria,

His men marched to ⌊the city of⌋ Samaria,

-or-

They tried to capture ⌊the capital city,⌋ Samaria.

17:5c and besieged it for three years.

and they surrounded the city. They stayed there for three years.

For three years, they camped around it ⌊so that no one could enter or leave it⌋ .
