17:6a In the ninth year of Hoshea,

During the ninth year of Hoshea’s ⌊reign/rule⌋ ,

When Hoshea had ⌊ruled Israel⌋ for nine years,

17:6b the king of Assyria captured Samaria

Shalmaneser gained control of Samaria.

the king of Assyria ⌊succeeded in⌋ capturing/conquering Samaria.

when Samaria ⌊finally⌋ fell/surrendered to the king/emperor of Assyria.

17:6c and carried away the Israelites to Assyria,

He captured ⌊its inhabitants⌋ , the Israelites, and sent them to live in Assyria.

He made the people of Israel go into exile in the land of Assyria.

The king/emperor then forced the people of Israel to leave their own land and go to live in the kingdom of Assyria.

17:6d where he settled them in Halah, in Gozan by the Habor River,

He forced them to settle/stay in ⌊the town of⌋ Halah, and in ⌊the town of⌋ Gozan on the River Habor,

He made some of them live in Halah ⌊town⌋ , and some near the River Habor in the territory of Gozan ⌊city⌋ .

Some of the Israelite people had to live in Halah ⌊town⌋ and some had to live in Gozan ⌊town⌋ by the Habor river.

17:6e and in the cities of the Medes.
