14:27a Then King Rehoboam made bronze shields in their place

So in their place, King Rehoboam made other bronze shields.

So King Rehoboam had shields made out of bronze instead.

14:27b and committed them to the care of the captains of the guard

He gave these shields to the captains of the guardsmen,

He handed them over to the officers of the royal guards to use

14:27c on duty at the entrance to the royal palace.

who held them as they guarded/protected the door of the king’s house.
