let this cup pass from me

The now commonly-used German idiom dieser Kelch gehe an jemandem vorüber (literally “may this chalice pass by someone”), which today is primarily means “hoping that fate will not go this but another way for someone,” was made popular in 1522 in the German New Testament translation by Martin Luther.
