SIL Translator’s Notes on 1 Corinthians 4:11

4:11a To this very hour we are hungry and thirsty,

Right up to the present time we (excl.) often do not have enough to eat and drink

Even up to now, we (excl.) often lack food and water.

4:11b we are poorly clothed,

and are poorly clothed.
-or-
Our (excl.) clothes are very worn/poor.

4:11c we are brutally treated,

And/Also people ⌊often⌋ hit/beat us (excl.).
-or-
People treat us (excl.) badly/roughly.

4:11d we are homeless.

We (excl.) have no home of our own.

5:6a Your boasting is not good.

You should not feel proud about your church group.
-or-
⌊Since/Because there is an immoral person in your group,⌋ you should not be talking proudly about yourselves.
-or-
⌊There is an immoral person in your group. But even so,⌋ you are proud of yourselves. This is not good/proper.

5:6b Do you not know that a little leaven works through the whole batch of dough?

Remember: a little bit of yeast can make a lot of dough puff up.
-or-
Remember what it is like when people make bread. They only need to use a small amount of yeast to make all of the bread rise. Bad behavior is like that yeast!
-or-
Don’t you know that even one sinner in your group may cause others to sin?

SIL Translator’s Notes on 1 Corinthians 4:12

4:12a We work hard with our own hands.

And/Also we (excl.) have to work very hard with our own hands ⌊to earn money⌋.

We (excl.) work hard to earn a living.

4:12b When we are vilified, we bless;

When people say bad things to us (excl.) we bless them.

If people wish bad to happen to us (excl.) we wish good to happen to them.

We ask God to help/bless those who insult us (excl.).

4:12c when we are persecuted, we endure it;

When people cause us (excl.) to suffer, we do not fight back.

5:7a Get rid of the old leaven,

Remove the old yeast ⌊of sin⌋

Just as the Jews remove all yeast from their houses before they celebrate the Passover feast, so you should remove/expel this immoral man from your group.

5:7b that you may be a new unleavened batch,

so that you may become ⌊like⌋ bread that has no yeast in it, ⌊that is, a pure church⌋.
-or-
Then you will be ⌊holy/pure⌋, like new bread made without yeast,

5:7c as you really are.

God has indeed made you clean/pure.
-or-
just as you really are God’s holy/special people.

5:7d For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.

For Christ has been sacrificed for us (incl.), like a Passover lamb.
-or-
For Christ has died as our (incl.) sacrifice, our (incl.) Passover Lamb.
-or-
For Christ died ⌊to set us (incl.) free from our (incl.) sins⌋. He is like the lamb that the Jews kill/sacrifice at Passover time.

4:13a when we are slandered, we answer gently.

When people say bad things about us (excl.) we say good things about them.

When people lie about us (excl.) we respond with kind, friendly words.
-or-
We (excl.) speak gently to those who slander us.

4:13b Up to this moment we have become the scum of the earth, the refuse of the world.

Even now people treat us (excl.) as if we (excl.) were rubbish/garbage that they throw away, or like dirt/scum that they scrape off a pot.

Right up to this day/hour people still do not respect us (excl.). They say we (excl.) are worthless.

SIL Translator’s Notes on 1 Corinthians 5:8

5:8a Therefore let us keep the feast,

So let us (incl.) keep/celebrate the Passover Festival/Feast

Since that is true, we (incl.) should celebrate the new life that Christ has given us.
-or-
So we (incl.) should live our new lives

5:8b not with the old bread,

and not make use of old yeast, ⌊that is, old ways of behaving⌋.

without any of our (incl.) old/former way of living/behaving.

5:8c leavened with malice and wickedness,

We (incl.) should stop acting in hateful, evil ways.

I told you not to be friends with people who commit sexual sins.

you should not fellowship with people who are immoral/unchaste.
