27:24a Joab son of Zeruiah began to count the men but did not finish.
Zeruiah’s son Joab started counting the males but he did not finish ⌊counting them⌋ .
-or-
⌊King David’s commander in chief was⌋ Joab whose mother was Zeruiah. ⌊King David caused/asked Joab⌋ to count the men, ⌊so he began to take a census,⌋ but he did not complete it.
27:24b For because of this census wrath came upon Israel,
But God was angry with the Israelites because ⌊King David had ordered their military commander⌋ to count the men of Israel.
-or-
Then God punished the people of Israel. He was angry when their king counted ⌊the strength of their men instead of trusting the strength of Yahweh⌋ .
27:24c and the number was not entered in the Book of the Chronicles of King David.
So they did not write the number of men in Israel ⌊country⌋ in the official records of King David.
-or-
Therefore the book/scroll of King David’s reign did not show/list the numbers of the census.
