Translation commentary on 1 Chronicles 7:36

The sons of Zophah …: Zophah was a son of Hotham (or, Helem), who was a great-grandson of Asher. Good News Translation renders sons as “descendants.” Since nothing more is known of the individuals listed in verses 36-37, there is no way to know whether they were sons or descendants of Zophah.

Verse 35 listed four sons of Hotham: Zophah, Imna, Shelesh, and Amal. Some scholars suggest that only Suah, Harnepher, and Shual were sons of Zophah. Beri, Imrah may be an error in which the Hebrew expression bny ymnh (the sons of Imna) was incorrectly copied as bry ymrh (Beri Imrah). If this suggestion is correct, the first three sons named in verse 37 would be the sons of Imna, the second of Hotham’s four sons, rather than sons number six through eight of Zophah.
