Legion

The Greek that is transliterated in English as “Legion” is translated in Adioukrou as “very many demons.” Hill (2006) notes the problem with that translation: “This eliminated the image of legions of Roman armies from the potential contextual assumptions evoked by the text. For first-century Jews, the picture of thousands of Roman soldiers may have evoked a strong emotive response, but for the Adioukrou, who do not know the terror of an occupying army, the only benefit of this detail might be that the demons outnumbered the pigs by two or three to one.”
