And if men were amazed at their power and working, let them perceive from them how much more powerful is he who formed them: This verse is parallel to the first two lines of verse 3, and translators will want to structure the translation of the two verses so as to reflect this. The word translated were amazed expresses a strong reaction, somewhere between amazement and terror. The idea is that people were so impressed, awed, and overwhelmed by the powerful forces of nature that they thought they must be gods. An alternative model for this verse is:

• If people are [so] overwhelmed [or, awed/impressed] by the violent power of these things, they should understand that the one who made [or, formed] them is even more powerful.
