Unlike New Revised Standard Version, Good News Translation opens new paragraphs here and at verses 4 and 5, as different people speak. If this is natural style in the translator’s language, Good News Translation should be followed.
It would do no harm to give him half may be rendered “We ought to give him half” or “I suggest that we give him half.”
The possessions brought back with me: This is literally “the possessions he brought back with me.” Good News Translation expresses this in a way more natural in English, “everything we brought back with us.” See also the next verse concerning brought back with me.
