Translation commentary on Susanna 1:49

If integrated into the book of Daniel: 13.49.

Return to the place of judgment: Daniel is speaking of a location here (Moore “Go back to the place of trial”), but the real point is that he wants the case to be heard again. Good News Translation has “Reopen the case” (similarly New English Bible), and New American Bible says “Return to court” (similarly Contemporary English Version). Or we may say “You must try the case again.”

For these men have borne false witness against her is literally “For lies these men have testified against her.” Good News Translation says it well with “The testimony these men gave was a lie.” In English “lie” is a strong word, and it reflects the emphasis in the Greek here. Moore has “these men have framed her.” Contemporary English Version expands somewhat with “and I will prove that the two men who accused Susanna were lying.”
