Good News Translation‘s paragraph break here is appropriate.

The children of sinners are abominable children, and they frequent the haunts of the ungodly: The main question here is what is meant by they frequent the haunts of the ungodly. Good News Translation (also New English Bible, Revised English Bible) takes it to mean that the children of sinful parents are “brought up in ungodly surroundings.” Others take it to mean that these children spend lots of time in disreputable places. We like Good News Translation‘s approach but translators may choose either. Abominable is rendered “hateful” by Good News Translation; other possibilities are “detestable,” “contemptible,” and “disgusting” (Contemporary English Version). It is a strong word of contempt. Good News Translation refers to “hateful people” rather than children, since they presumably become hateful as they grow older. (New Jerusalem Bible translates “Hateful brats”; this is possible, but we doubt it is what the author intended.) Good News Translation‘s reordering of the clauses in this verse will be unnatural in some languages. Contemporary English Version is simpler, and shows a causative relationship:

• The children of sinners
are disgusting,
because they are raised
in godless homes.
