Lot

The Hebrew and Greek that is transliterated as “Lot” in English is translated in Spanish Sign Language with a sign that signifies “cousin,” referring to the fact that Lot is Abraham’s cousin (see Genesis 11:27). (Source: Steve Parkhurst)

Translation commentary on Sirach 16:8

He did not spare the neighbors of Lot: The reference here is to Gen 19.1-25. He did not spare may also be expressed as “He destroyed [or, wiped from the earth].” The neighbors of Lot refers to Lot’s fellow townsmen, not to people living nearby. So Good News Translation has “the people among whom Lot lived,” or we may say “the people of the town of Sodom.”

Whom he loathed on account of their insolence: Good News Translation has the Lord detesting the arrogance of the people rather than the people because of their arrogance, but this is simply part of its restructuring and means the same thing. In Good News Translation the logical flow is more natural and easily understood. However, the people’s destruction is the result of God’s detesting their arrogance. This is clear in Contemporary English Version‘s model:

• And he so hated the arrogance
of the people of Sodom,
that he destroyed them.

Another way to express this is:

• The people of Sodom were very arrogant.
The Lord hated this, so he destroyed them.
