Introduction to Obadiah (Pioneer Bible Translators)

(Pioneer Bible Translators and The Word for the World use the following introduction in many of their translation projects around the world.)

This book contains the prophecies of Obadiah. Obadiah’s message is a pronouncement of judgment against the people of Edom who were the descendants of Esau. Scholars do not know when the book of Obadiah was written. It is possible that the judgment refers to the time when Babylon invaded Jerusalem, and Edom did not help Israel. If this is true, then it was probably written around 600 B.C.

Obadiah first pronounces judgment against Edom only, but then he includes all nations in this judgment in verse 15. Finally, Obadiah says that one day the Israelite captives will return and receive back their land.

Outline:

1. In verses 1-14 judgment is pronounced on Edom.
2. Verses 15-21 say how all nations will be judged for their pride and that the captive Israelites will return and possess their land, even ruling over the land of Edom.

Introduction au livre d’Abdias

Introduction to Obadiah (Christian Community Bible)

(The Catholic Christian Community Bible [first English edition 1997, other translations into Indonesian, Chinese, Cebuano, Chavacano, French, Ilonggo, Korean, Quechuan, Spanish, and Tagalog] “for the Christian Communities of the Third World” uses the following introduction.)

Obadiah probably wrote after 500 and before the conquest of Edom in 312. His work is filled with calls for revenge which, deep down, shows his faith in God’s justice.

Down below are the introductions in the Mandarin Chinese, Tagalog, Cebuano, and Spanish editions.
