Introduction to Nahum (Pioneer Bible Translators)

(Pioneer Bible Translators and The Word for the World use the following introduction in many of their translation projects around the world.)

This book contains the vision of Nahum. Nahum’s message was against Assyria. He calls this nation “Nineveh,” which is the name of its capital city. Assyria was the kingdom that conquered and took the people of the northern kingdom of Israel into captivity. Because Nahum mentions the fall of the city Thebes (3:8), we can know that he prophesied sometime between 663 B.C., when Thebes fell, and 612 B.C., when Nineveh fell.

Nahum’s message is that God will punish the guilty. Although God does not easily become angry, he is powerful (1:3). He said that Nineveh and Assyria would fall and that their people would be taken into captivity. To the people of Judah, this was certainly very good news (1:15).

Outline:

1. Chapter 1:1-8 describes God as just and vengeful.
2. Chapters 1:9-3 pronounce judgement on Nineveh and Assyria.

Introduction au livre de Nahum

Introduction to Nahum (Christian Community Bible)

(The Catholic Christian Community Bible [first English edition 1997, other translations into Indonesian, Chinese, Cebuano, Chavacano, French, Ilonggo, Korean, Quechuan, Spanish, and Tagalog] “for the Christian Communities of the Third World” uses the following introduction.)

Nahum prophesied when the Assyrian power was collapsing, at the death of Ashurbanipal, the last king in 626. In 612 the Medes and Babylonian allies attacked and destroyed Nineveh, the capital of the Assyrians. Even before that, however, the Assyrians were losing their control over the people whom they had enslaved and who thoroughly hated them. The Jews were among them. Nahum’s poems show the heart of a patriot who believes that the Lord governs the history of the nations.

Down below are the introductions in the Mandarin Chinese, Tagalog, Cebuano, and Spanish editions.
