Exegesis:

tauta de autōn lalountōn ‘while they were still telling these things.’ tauta at the beginning of the clause refers back to v. 35. autōn takes up autoi in v. 35.

autos estē en mesō autōn ‘he himself stood in their midst.’ For estē cf. on 6.8. en mesō autōn does not suggest that Jesus is in the very centre of the group but that he is among them, cf. on 2.46. autōn refers to the whole group, not to the two disciples that had come from Emmaus.

eirēnē humin ‘peace to you,’ cf. on 10.5, here without eschatological connotation.

Translation:

As they were saying this, or, ‘as they were telling (them) their story’ (cf. The Four Gospels – a New Translation, Good News Translation).

Jesus himself stood among them, an unexpected event; hence, “there he was, standing among them” (New English Bible), ‘suddenly Jesus stood in their midst’ (Bahasa Indonesia). Stood. One should not employ a term specifically used to indicate the appearance of disembodied spirits.

Peace to you. Several versions use a literal rendering of this formula of salutation, for which see on 10.5; Western Highland Purepecha prefers an equivalent formula, ‘God guard you.’
