ἔγνω [ὁ] Ἰησοῦς ὅτι ἤθελον αὐτὸν ἐρωτᾶν, καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, Περὶ τούτου ζητεῖτε μετ᾽ ἀλλήλων ὅτι εἶπον, Μικρὸν καὶ οὐ θεωρεῖτέ με, καὶ πάλιν μικρὸν καὶ ὄψεσθέ με;
19Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, “Are you discussing among yourselves what I meant when I said, ‘A little while, and you will no longer see me, and again a little while, and you will see me’?
In Greek, Jesus’ reply to his disciples is a single sentence. Is that what you are asking among yourselves? contains the first element in the Greek sentence order. Compare, for example, the fairly literal rendering of the Revised Standard Version: “Is this what you are asking yourselves, what I meant by saying, ‘A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me’?” Jerusalem Bible translates Jesus’ reply in a statement, “You are asking one another what I meant by saying: In a short time you will no longer see me again.” New American Bible is similar to Jerusalem Bible in its restructuring.
