Translation commentary on 2 Maccabees 8:25

They captured the money of those who had come to buy them as slaves: Captured may be rendered “seized” (Good News Bible) or simply “took” (Contemporary English Version). Those who had come to buy them as slaves are the people referred to in 1Macc 3.41.

After pursuing them for some distance, they were obliged to return because the hour was late: The pronoun them refers to the survivors of Nicanor’s army, not the people who wanted to buy slaves. The hour was late may be translated “it was almost sundown” or “the sun was going down.” We recommend following Good News Bible by joining this sentence to verse 26 (see the model below for verses 25b-26).
