Translation commentary on 2 Maccabees 7:41

This verse is effective as a short paragraph of its own (so Revised Standard Version, Good News Bible).

Last of all, the mother died, after her sons: It is unnecessary to translate both Last of all and after her sons; if she died last, it was obviously after her sons. While the Greek says simply died, it is permissible to say “was put to death” (Good News Bible), since that is clearly implied in the narrative. The king had his men execute her. So in languages that do not have the passive voice, translators may render this verse as follows:

• Last of all, the king had his men kill the mother.
