For many of those who live on the earth shall perish by famine; and those who survive the famine shall die by the sword: The connector For may be omitted (so Good News Bible, Contemporary English Version). Good News Bible provides a good model for this verse. Another possible one is:

• Many people on earth will starve to death, and those who survive will die in war.
