Behold, famine and plague, tribulation and anguish are sent as scourges for the correction of men: Compare Pro 3.11-12; Amos 4.6-12. For the word Behold, which highlights the following message, see 2 Esd 6.18; for plague see 2 Esd 15.11. The word scourges refers to punishment. Good News Bible provides a simple model for this verse. However, for those languages that do not have the passive voice, we suggest the following model based on Contemporary English Version:

• God will surely send famine [or, starvation], disease, pain, and disaster to punish and correct the people of the earth.
