Revised Standard Version doesn’t begin a new paragraph till verse 19. However, we suggest beginning one here (so Good News Bible, Contemporary English Version), since the subject changes to the return to Emmaus by Judas and his men.
Then Judas and his force turned back from pursuing them: Good News Bible may be used as a model here, but New English Bible is probably better with “Judas and his force then broke off the pursuit and returned [to Emmaus].” A model using simpler language is:
• Judas and his soldiers then stopped pursuing [or, chasing] them and returned to Emmaus.
