Translation commentary on 1 Maccabees 3:12

Then they seized their spoils: The Jewish fighters stripped the dead bodies of the enemy of any items (spoils) that were useful or valuable. Contemporary English Version makes this quite clear with “Then everyone took what they wanted from the dead soldiers.”

And Judas took the sword of Apollonius: Good News Bible does well here, although it might be a bit better to say “Judas took the sword from Apollonius.”

And used it in battle the rest of his life may be rendered “and used it to fight his enemies for the rest of his life.”
