Translation commentary on 1 Maccabees 13:7

Translators may insert a paragraph break here, as in Revised Standard Version and Good News Bible.

The spirit of the people was rekindled when they heard these words: The spirit of the people was rekindled means that they were no longer fearful; they were ready again to fight. Good News Bible says “revived the morale of the people,” which is rather idiomatic. An alternative model for this verse is:

• Simon’s speech [or, words] made the people determined again to fight their enemies.
