Zerubbabel

The name that is transliterated as “Zerubbabel” or “Shealtiel” in English is translated in Libras (Brazilian Sign Language) with a sign that combines “begotten” (the name means “begotten in Babylon”) and a reference that he led the first group that left the city of Babylon to build the second Temple in Jerusalem (see Ezra 3:8). Translation commentary on 1 Esdras 5:65

So that the people could not hear the trumpets because of the weeping of the people. For the multitude sounded the trumpets loudly, so that the sound was heard afar: The picture here is rather different from that in the parallel passage of Ezra 3.13, where again, trumpets are not mentioned. Here the author describes a scene with some people weeping and others blowing trumpets. The mourning was so loud that people nearby could hardly hear the trumpets, but the sound of the trumpets was heard clearly at a distance. From a literary point of view, this allows the author to explain how the non-Jews living in Judah learned about what was going on in Jerusalem (see verse 66). Good News Bible provides a good model for this verse. Contemporary English Version is also good with the following model:

• The trumpets could be heard far away. But up close, the sound of weeping and crying drowned out the sound of the trumpets.
