Translation commentary on 1 Chronicles 7:38

The sons of Jether …: As in verse 36, Good News Translation renders sons as “descendants,” but this interpretation is far from certain in this particular case. Some interpreters think the name Jether here is an error for “Ithran” (verse 37). New Jerusalem Bible and Osty-Trinquet, following this interpretation, say “Sons of Ithran….” New Living Translation has a footnote on verse 37, saying that Ithran is possibly another name for Jether. Such a footnote may be used in other languages, but translators should avoid using the same spelling for these two names since we do not know for sure that the two similar names refer to the same person.
