SIL Translator’s Notes on Ezra 3:9

3:9a So Jeshua and his sons and brothers, Kadmiel and his sons (descendants of Yehudah),

Jeshua and his sons and his brothers, Kadmiel, who was a descendant of Yehudah, and his sons,

So Jeshua and his sons and relatives ⌊worked together⌋ with Kadmiel and his sons ⌊to lead/direct the people as they built the temple of God⌋. Kadmiel and his sons had Yehudah as their ancestor.

The Levites who led the work on the house of God were Jeshua and his sons and brothers, Kadmiel and his sons, and also the family/clan of Henadad. The ancestor of Kadmiel and his sons was Yehudah.

8:1a These are the family heads and genealogical records of those who returned with me from Babylon

¶ These are the heads/chiefs of extended families and the men of their families who came with them who have written proof of their descent/ancestry. They traveled/journeyed from Babylon with me

¶ These are ⌊the names of⌋ clan/family leaders who came with me from Babylon and ⌊the number of⌋ men who were/came with them. The lineage of all of them was recorded/written in a book.

¶ The following are the ancestors of family groups and the men of their family whose names were found in a genealogical record. They are the ones who came with me, Ezra, from Babylon ⌊to Jerusalem⌋.

8:1b during the reign of King Artaxerxes:

10:14a Let our leaders represent the whole assembly.

Let our (excl.) officials/rulers represent the whole community.

So allow/permit our leaders/chiefs to decide for all of us what we should do. (Translation for Translators)

10:14b Then let everyone in our towns who has married a foreign woman come at an appointed time,

Let everyone in the towns ⌊of Judah and Benjamin⌋ who has married a woman who is not a Jew come ⌊to Jerusalem⌋ at an appointed time.

Then on a set/decided day, every man who has taken a pagan woman as his wife and who does not live in Jerusalem will/must come ⌊here⌋.
