Section 4:1-7

Elisha helped a poor widow

4:1a Now the wife of one of the sons of the prophets cried out to Elisha,

A woman ⌊who had been⌋ married to one of the young/assistant prophets came and called to/on Elisha ⌊to help her⌋ . She said,

-or-

⌊One day⌋ a widow ⌊came⌋ to Elisha and asked for help. Her husband had been a member of the community of prophets. She said,

4:1b “Your servant, my husband, is dead,

“Respected sir, my husband is dead.

-or-

“My husband who respected/followed you (sing.) has died!

4:1c and you know that your servant feared the LORD.

You (sing.) know that/how he had great respect for Yahweh.

-or-

As you (sing.) know, he honored and obeyed Yahweh.

4:1d And now his creditor is coming

But now a man who had lent him money has come.

-or-

But he owed money to a man. ⌊I cannot pay it back.⌋ Now the man is on his way

-or-

But ⌊in the past⌋ he had borrowed ⌊a lot of⌋ money from a man. Now that man has come ⌊to me⌋

4:1e to take my two children as his slaves!”

He wants to take my two sons to be his slaves.”

-or-

to take away my two sons and make them his slaves.”

-or-

to make my sons slaves ⌊as payment for the debt⌋ .”

4:33a So he went in, closed the door behind the two of them

Elisha went in and closed the door behind the two of them.

He entered ⌊the/his room⌋ and closed the door. Only he and the child were there/inside.

4:33b and prayed to the LORD.

⌊There⌋ he prayed to Yahweh.

Then he prayed to Yahweh ⌊for help⌋ .

5:21a So Gehazi pursued Naaman.

So Gehazi pursued/followed Naaman.

-or-

So Gehazi left and followed Naaman.

5:21b And when Naaman saw him running toward him,

When Naaman saw Gehazi running toward him,

When Naaman saw that Gehazi was hurrying toward him,

5:21c he got down from the chariot to meet him

he quickly got down from the chariot to meet him.

he ⌊stopped⌋ his chariot and jumped down/out.

5:21d and asked, “Is everything all right?”

He/Naaman asked ⌊him⌋ , “Is all well?”

Naaman asked ⌊Gehazi⌋ , “Is something wrong?”

He asked Gehazi if everything was all right.

6:26a As the king of Israel was passing by on the wall,

⌊It happened that⌋ Israel’s king was walking along the wall ⌊of the city⌋ .

6:26b a woman cried out to him, “Help me, my lord the king!”

A woman shouted to him, saying, “My master the king, ⌊please,⌋ help me!”

A woman ⌊looked up and⌋ saw him. Then she called to him ⌊saying⌋ , “Your Majesty, please save me!”

A woman ⌊in the city⌋ ⌊saw the king and⌋ shouted to him for help/assistance.

8:5a And Gehazi was telling the king how Elisha had brought the dead back to life.

Gehazi began to tell the king how Elisha had brought a dead person back to life.

Gehazi began to tell the king that Elisha had caused a dead boy to live again.

8:5b Just then the woman whose son Elisha had revived came

Just then the woman to whose son Elisha had given life came

At the same time the mother of the boy arrived.

8:5c to appeal to the king for her house and her land.

to ask the king to help her recover her house and fields.

⌊She wanted⌋ to ask the king for her house and her farm.

8:5d So Gehazi said, “My lord the king, this is the woman,

Gehazi said, “My lord and king, this is the woman,

Gehazi exclaimed ⌊to the king,⌋ “Your Majesty, this is the woman ⌊I was talking about⌋ .

8:5e and this is the son Elisha restored to life.”

and this is her son whom Elisha brought back to life.”

This is also her son who was dead but Elisha made him alive again.”

9:8a The whole house of Ahab will perish,

All of the ⌊male⌋ members of Ahab’s house must die.

Every person in the family of Ahab must be put to death.

9:8b and I will cut off from Ahab every male,

I Yahweh will use you to destroy every male person in the family of Ahab in Israel.

For Yahweh has decided to kill every man from the family of Ahab in ⌊the land of⌋ Israel,

9:8c both slave and free, in Israel.

The Hebrew idiom that the Berean Standard Bible translates as “slave and free” is literally “restrained or freed.” Its exact meaning is uncertain. Translators may wish to follow the national version.

10:3a select the best and most worthy son of your master,

choose (plur.) one of your master’s sons, the one who is the best and most capable/respected.

-or-

you can/should select from the young men descended from Ahab the one who is the most suitable/qualified ⌊to be king⌋ .

10:3b set him on his father’s throne

Allow/Cause him to rule on the throne of his father.

-or-

Make/Declare him king in place of his father.

10:3c and fight for your master’s house.”

Then fight for the family/dynasty of your master/lord!”

Then defend/protect Ahab’s line/dynasty!”
