I choose not to do it and to fall into your hands …: It is important to catch the right tone for this verse, and translators must ask themselves what Susanna’s state of mind is here. Is she conducting herself with solemn dignity? Is she frantic? Translations of this verse can sound absurdly formal if Susanna’s heart is pounding with fear. In the next verse she will scream, which makes stern defiance seem out of place here. Good News Translation comes close to getting the appropriate excitement in, but could be improved by saying “I’m not going to do it! I’d rather be your innocent victim….”

To sin in the sight of the Lord is simply to “sin against [or, disobey] the Lord [or, God].” Compare Joseph’s reply to Potiphar’s wife in Gen 39.8-9.
