Translation commentary on Numbers 29:6

Besides the burnt offering of the new moon, and its cereal offering, and the continual burnt offering and its cereal offering, and their drink offering: For the burnt offering of the new moon, and its cereal offering, see 28.11-13. These offerings were made on the first day of every month. The pronoun its in this phrase refers to the burnt offering of the new moon. For the continual burnt offering and its cereal offering, see 28.3-5. These offerings were made in the morning and evening of each day. The pronoun its in this phrase refers to the continual burnt offering. Their drink offering refers to the drink offerings of the monthly and daily burnt offerings. If this is unclear, it may be helpful to translate this phrase as “each with its libation” (New Jewish Publication Society’s Tanakh). For drink offering, see 4.7 and 15.5. The Hebrew word for drink offering is plural, so New Revised Standard Version has “drink offerings.” The offerings on the first day of the seventh month (verses 2-5) were in addition to these monthly and daily offerings. A model for this first half of the verse that makes this clear is “Offer these in addition to the regular burnt offering for the first day of the month with its grain offering and wine offering, and the daily burnt offering with its grain offering and wine offering” (similarly Good News Translation).

According to the ordinance for them: The pronoun them refers to the offerings listed in this verse. NET Bible and New Jewish Publication Society’s Tanakh render this phrase simply as “as prescribed.”

A pleasing odor, an offering by fire to the LORD: See the comments on 28.2. As noted there, the phrase a pleasing odor expresses “the anthropomorphic soothing aspect of the sacrifices by which God is heartened and satisfied with the act of the worshiper” (Cole, page 478), thereby restoring or reinforcing spiritual fellowship. This phrase forms a boundary marker for this unit.
