There is no verb in the Hebrew text of verses 17-19. Good News Translation adds the verb “offer.” This passage takes the form of a list. In some languages there may be a special way in which such a text is structured or expressed stylistically.

On the second day refers to the second day of the Festival of Shelters, which New Century Version makes clear by saying “On the second day of this festival.”

Twelve young bulls, two rams, fourteen male lambs a year old without blemish: See verse 2. These were the animals the Israelites had to offer as burnt offerings on the second day of the festival. See verse 13, where it is explained why the young bulls decrease by one on each successive day of the festival.

With the cereal offering and the drink offerings for the bulls, for the rams, and for the lambs, by number, according to the ordinance: A grain offering and a drink offering had to accompany each burnt offering. New Living Translation provides a helpful model here, saying “Each of these offerings of bulls, rams, and [male] lambs must be accompanied by its prescribed grain offering and liquid offering.”

Also one male goat for a sin offering: See verse 16 and 28.15.

Besides the continual burnt offering and its cereal offering, and their drink offerings: See verse 16 and 28.3-8. The pronoun its refers to the continual burnt offering, and the pronoun their refers to both “the regular burnt offering and its grain offering” (New Revised Standard Version). However, instead of their drink offerings, a few Hebrew manuscripts, the Vulgate, and the Peshitta have “its drink offering.” The pronoun “its” refers to the continual burnt offering, as in verse 16. Milgrom (page 327) notes that the plural expression their drink offerings does not fit this context, since each daily burnt offering was accompanied by only one drink offering. So we recommend the following model for this whole phrase: “in addition to the regular burnt offering with its accompanying grain offering and liquid [or, drink] offering” (New Living Translation; similarly Revised English Bible, De Nieuwe Bijbelvertaling, Contemporary Russian Version).

In some languages translators may want to avoid the repetition in the text of verses 17-34. Good News Translation may seem a helpful model for verses 18-19 by saying simply “Offer with them all the other offerings required for the first day.” However, this model would leave out the drink offerings accompanying the burnt offerings in verse 18, since these offerings are not mentioned in connection with the first day. This explains why Good News Translation adds “with the required wine offerings” in verse 15. A more helpful model for translators who need to reduce the repetition in verses 17-34 is the one in Bible en français courant, which reads as follows:

• 17-34 “From the second to the seventh day, in addition to the daily complete sacrifice, you will offer as sacrifices animals without blemish, accompanied by the usual offerings [or, with the accompanying cereal offerings and drink offerings]. The list is as follows:
second day: twelve bulls, two rams and fourteen lambs of one year, as well as a goat;
third day: eleven bulls, two rams and fourteen lambs of one year, as well as a goat;
fourth day: ten bulls, two rams and fourteen lambs of one year, as well as a goat;
fifth day: nine bulls, two rams and fourteen lambs of one year, as well as a goat;
sixth day: eight bulls, two rams and fourteen lambs of one year, as well as a goat;
seventh day: seven bulls, two rams and fourteen lambs of one year, as well as a goat.
