‘And not even in this manner was their witness consistent’: for ise ‘alike,’ ‘the same’ cf. v. 56; marturia ‘witness,’ ‘testimony’ cf. v. 55.
Translation:
In instances in which testimony must be translated as a verb, one may need to recast the sentence as ‘but even in what they said they didn’t say the same thing’ or ‘even these men who spoke did not say the same words.’
