In Die Bibel im heutigen Deutsch verses 25-32 are given a separate heading: “Wheat and chaff are differentiated!” Similarly, Bible en français courant has “Do not confuse the chaff with the grain.”

I have heard what the prophets have said who prophesy lies in my name can be expressed as “I have heard the lies of those prophets who say they received a message from me” or “I know what those prophets claim to have heard from me.” For prophesy lies in my name, see 14.14.

I have dreamed, I have dreamed!: Dreams are similar to visions, but they specifically come to someone who is asleep. Although dreams were viewed as legitimate channels of revelation, the LORD indicates that the prophets are passing on their own dreams as though they had come from the LORD himself. Good News Translation changes I have dreamed, I have dreamed! to indirect discourse and makes the meaning quite clear: “and claim that I have given them my messages in their dreams.”

• The LORD says: “I have heard the dribble of these prophets. ‘I had a dream, I had a dream!’ they say and intend thereby to make my people believe that they are speaking with my authority. But all they utter are lies and deception.”
