Although the Greek has “he,” it is helpful to the English reader to translate “he,” as Barnabas, since the last previous mention of his name was in verse 22. Barnabas is here described in the same way that Stephen was in 6.5.

The Greek verb, “were added to,” must be understood in the sense were brought to or “were won over to” (Jerusalem Bible and New English Bible). There is, however, a difficulty with the passive construction were brought to since in many languages this is not only awkward but grammatically impossible. The closest equivalent may be in some instances “came to believe in.”
