Translation commentary on 2 Chronicles 26:2

Good News Translation and Moffatt take this whole verse as parenthetical, but most versions consider it a part of the main storyline.

He built Eloth and restored it to Judah: The pronoun for He is emphatic in Hebrew. Several versions reflect its emphasis by beginning this verse with “He was the one who rebuilt…” (New International Version) or “It was he who [re]built…” (Revised English Bible, New Jerusalem Bible, New Jewish Publication Society’s Tanakh, Traduction œcuménique de la Bible). Eloth was a port city on the Gulf of Aqaba (see the comments on 2 Chr 8.17). The more common spelling of the name Eloth is “Elath” (Good News Translation). This city had been in existence since at least the time of the Exodus (Deut 2.8), so the verb “rebuilt” (New Revised Standard Version, Good News Translation, Moffatt, Bible en français courant, Parola Del Signore: La Bibbia in Lingua Corrente) is more appropriate here than the verb built. During the reigns of David and Solomon this city was under Israelite control, but apparently the Edomites had regained control some time before the reign of Uzziah, so restored it to Judah means that he “recaptured” (Good News Translation) or “reconquered” (Bible en français courant, Parola Del Signore: La Bibbia in Lingua Corrente) it from the Edomites. Some may have to translate “brought it back under the control of Judah.” Other possible renderings are “gave it back to Judah” (Bible de Jérusalem, Traduction œcuménique de la Bible) and “made it part of Judah again” (New Century Version). The order of the verbs built and restored may have to be reversed in many languages since the city would have to be recaptured before it could be rebuilt (so Good News Translation).

After the king slept with his fathers: The king refers to Uzziah’s father, Amaziah, as some versions make explicit (so Good News Translation, Moffatt). For slept with his fathers, see the comments on 2 Chr 9.31.
