Translation commentary on 1 Chronicles 8:4

As noted in the comments on the previous verse, some scholars correct the Hebrew text at the end of verse 3 to read “Gera the father of Ehud.” Some interpreters who follow this correction think that the persons named in verses 4 and 5 are, then, the sons of Ehud rather than the sons of Bela. Knoppers and Klein argue that the words “These are/were the sons of Ehud” were accidentally omitted from the beginning of verse 4 and then later incorrectly inserted at the beginning of verse 6. They correct the text by inserting “These are/were the sons of Ehud” here at the beginning of verse 4, where they think these words were originally. New American Bible accepts this interpretation by rendering verses 4-5 as “4 The sons of Ehud were Abishua, Naaman, Ahoah, 5 Gera, Shephuphan, and Huram.” However, there is no manuscript support for this correction.

Naaman is called a son of Benjamin in Gen 46.21. Here he is presented as Benjamin’s grandson.
