And he left Zadok the priest and his brethren the priests before the tabernacle of the LORD: And he left Zadok is literally “And Zadok.” Revised Standard Version inserts the phrase he left from verse 37. American Bible inserts “he ordered” and “to remain,” saying “But [he ordered] Zadok the priest and his brothers, the priests, [to remain] before the tabernacle….” As in the previous verse, his brethren refers to “his kinsmen.” His brethren the priests may be rendered “his fellow priests.” Tabernacle is translated “place of worship” by Good News Translation, but the reference is specifically to the tabernacle or tent mentioned in 1 Chr 6.32 (see the comments there).

In the high place that was at Gibeon: In his fourth-century translation into Latin, Jerome rendered the Hebrew term bamah by the Latin word excelsus, which is the basis for the English translation high place. Most scholars today recognize that high place is not an adequate translation, since many bamoth (plural of bamah) were not located on hills or other high places. Perhaps the best translation in English is “shrine” (Revised English Bible, New Jewish Publication Society’s Tanakh), “place of worship” (New Century Version), or “worship center” ( NET Bible). The bamoth were local places of worship not connected with the Temple in Jerusalem. For Gibeon see the introductory comments on this section [1 Chr 16.37-43].
