5:17a Gilead remained beyond the Jordan.

In Gilead on the other side of the Jordan, the people stayed where they were.

5:17b Dan, why did you linger by the ships?

Why did the Dan people remain with the ships?

The clan of Dan should not have stayed near their boats.

5:17c Asher stayed at the coast and remained in his harbors.

The Asher people stayed on the shore of the sea and rested in their ports.

The clan of Asher also stayed by the sea, near their harbors.
