SIL Translator’s Notes on Judges 14:18

14:18a Before sunset on the seventh day, the men of the city said to Samson:

Before the sun went down on the seventh day, the men of the town said to Samson,
-or-
Then the men of the city/Timnah spoke to Samson before sunset on the seventh day.

14:18b “What is sweeter than honey?

“Is there anything sweeter than honey?
-or-
“Nothing is sweeter than honey.

14:18c And what is stronger than a lion?”

Is there anything stronger than a lion?”
-or-
No one is stronger than a lion.”

14:18d So he said to them: “If you had not plowed with my heifer,

Samson told them, “If you had not plowed with my young ⌊female⌋ cow,
-or-
Samson replied, “It is only because you forced my wife/bride/fiancée to ask me

14:18e you would not have solved my riddle!”

you would not have found the answer to my riddle.”
-or-
that you got the answer to my riddle.”

14:18d-e (reordered)

Samson told them, “You would not have solved my riddle if you had not plowed with my young ⌊female⌋ cow.”
-or-
Samson replied, “You only got the answer to my riddle because you pressured my wife/bride/fiancée.”
