A total of twelve thousand men and women fell that day—all the people of Ai: This verse is a summary of the outcome of the battle between the Israelites and the citizens of Ai. The summary statement as introduced in Hebrew with the words “and it was.” The New Living Translation (2004) introduces this summary statement with the word:
