SIL Translator’s Notes on Ezra 5:17

5:17a Now, therefore, if it pleases the king,

¶ So if it pleases you (sing.), O King,
-or-
¶ “⌊Your Majesty,⌋ if this is/seems good to you,

5:17b let a search be made of the royal archives in Babylon

then send (sing.)someone/people⌋ to search in the king’s treasure house in Babylon
-or-
command ⌊some of your officials⌋ to go to the royal store house in ⌊the city of⌋ Babylon. Tell them to look through the documents/records of the kings/kingdom

5:17c to see if King Cyrus did indeed issue a decree to rebuild the house of God in Jerusalem.

to discover if King Cyrus truly/really commanded to rebuild the temple at Jerusalem.
-or-
for King Cyrus’s order. ⌊We (excl.) want⌋ to know if it is true that he instructed/told ⌊the Jews⌋ to build this house of God in Jerusalem again ⌊or not⌋.

5:17d Then let the king send us his decision in this matter.

Then may the king send to us (excl.)a letter to inform us⌋ what he decides concerning this.

Then we ask you (sing.), Your Majesty, to tell us what you want us to do.”
