Section 1:1–11

King Cyrus allowed the Jews to return to the land of Judah

1:1a In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia,

¶ In the first year that Cyrus was the king/chief of ⌊the country of⌋ Persia,
-or-
¶ During the first year that Cyrus ruled ⌊the land called⌋ Persia,

1:1b to fulfill the word of the LORD spoken through Jeremiah,

Yahweh caused to happen the thing that he had told Jeremiah to say.
-or-
Yahweh made come true the message that he told ⌊people⌋ through ⌊the prophet⌋ Jeremiah.

1:1c the LORD stirred the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia to send a proclamation throughout his kingdom

Yahweh led the king/chief of Persia to make an announcement throughout his country/kingdom

He gave King Cyrus the desire to send ⌊the following⌋ instructions to all the places in his land,

1:1d and to put it in writing as follows:

and also to write it. King Cyrus wrote,

and to record them in an official document. ⌊Here are the instructions:⌋

In the first year that Cyrus was the king of ⌊the country of⌋ Persia, Yahweh gave him the desire to make an announcement throughout his country and to put it in writing. He did this to cause to happen what he had told ⌊the prophet⌋ Jeremiah to say.
