8:21a So Jehoram crossed over to Zair with all his chariots.

Then Jehoram took all his chariots and went to ⌊attack⌋ ⌊the town of⌋ Zair ⌊in Edom⌋ .

⌊When Jehoram heard that,⌋ he went with ⌊his soldiers and⌋ all their war carts ⌊to fight/reconquer⌋ ⌊the Edomite town of⌋ Zair.

8:21b When the Edomites surrounded him and his chariot commanders,

The men/soldiers of Edom surrounded the king and the commanders of his chariots.

But the Edomite army surrounded Jehoram and the commanders of his chariots.

8:21c he rose up and attacked by night.

But the king was able to escape during the night.

During the darkness, Jehoram was able to run away.

8:21d His troops, however, fled to their homes.

However, his troops fled to their homes.

But his soldiers ⌊left him and⌋ went to their homes.
