SIL Translator’s Notes on 2 Kings 7:2

7:2a But the officer on whose arm the king leaned answered the man of God,

The officer who was the king’s chief assistant said to the man of God,

-or-

The officer on whom the king depended/relied said to the prophet ⌊Elisha⌋ ,

-or-

The military officer attending/assisting the king ⌊heard this⌋ . He told the prophet that

7:2b “Look, even if the LORD were to make windows in heaven,

“Even if Yahweh opens the windows of the sky,

-or-

“Even if Yahweh ⌊pours down grain⌋ through the windows in the sky,

-or-

even if Yahweh ⌊sent them food⌋ from the sky,

7:2c could this really happen?”

that/this will not happen.”

-or-

what you said⌋ cannot happen.”

-or-

what he was saying⌋ was impossible.

7:2b-c (reordered)

“That is not going to happen, even if Yahweh opens heaven’s windows ⌊to send us food⌋ !”

7:2d “You will see it with your own eyes,” replied Elisha,

But Elisha said, “With your own eyes you will see it happen,

-or-

But Elisha replied, “You yourself will see the people buying food.

-or-

The prophet said that the officer would actually/personally see the food ⌊he was talking about⌋ .

7:2e “but you will not eat any of it.”

but you will not eat any of the food/grain.”

-or-

But you will not be able to eat any of it.”

-or-

However, he would not get/eat any himself.
