SIL Translator’s Notes on 2 Kings 6:31

6:31a He announced, “May God punish me, and ever so severely,

He exclaimed, “May God punish me very harshly ⌊if I break this oath⌋ !

Then the king ⌊swore an oath⌋ . He said, “Let God punish me, yes, even kill me,

-or-

The king shouted, “May God strike me dead

6:31b if the head of Elisha son of Shaphat remains on his shoulders through this day!”

Shaphat’s son Elisha will lose his head/life by evening!”

-or-

if I do not kill/behead Elisha, the son of Shaphat, before night/dark!”

-or-

if I do not cut off the head of Elisha, the son of Shaphat this very day!”

6:31a-b (reordered)

The king threatened to kill Elisha, Shaphat’s son ⌊for causing him this trouble⌋ . He swore that God should severely punish him if he did not do it that same day.
