SIL Translator’s Notes on 2 Kings 5:17

5:17a “If you will not,” said Naaman,

So/Then Naaman said, “Since you (sing.) will not ⌊accept anything⌋ ,

-or-

Finally⌋ Naaman said to Elisha, “You will not ⌊take/receive my gift⌋ ,

5:17b “please let me, your servant, be given as much soil as a pair of mules can carry.

please give me, your servant, some soil ⌊from Israel⌋ , an amount that two mules can carry.

-or-

but please allow me to have/take some soil ⌊from the land of Israel⌋ . I will load it on a pair of ⌊my⌋ pack animals ⌊and take it to Aram/Syria with me⌋ .

5:17c For your servant will never again make a burnt offering or a sacrifice

For ⌊I⌋ your servant, will never again make burnt offerings or offer other sacrifices

-or-

From now on, sir, I will only give burnt offerings and sacrifices

5:17d to any other god but the LORD.

to any god except Yahweh ⌊the God of Israel⌋ .

-or-

to Yahweh, ⌊and I wish to make an altar for him⌋ . I will never give any offerings and sacrifices to other gods.

5:17c-d (reordered)

Sir, ⌊I need soil from Israel⌋ because from now on, ⌊I will worship⌋ Yahweh alone. I will not offer burnt sacrifices or peace offerings to the gods of any other ⌊land/country⌋ .
