SIL Translator’s Notes on 2 Kings 23:11

23:11a And he removed from the entrance to the house of the LORD

He ⌊also⌋ removed from the gate of the temple of Yahweh

-or-

Josiah ⌊also⌋ took away from the door of the temple of Yahweh

23:11b the horses that the kings of Judah had dedicated to the sun.

It is uncertain if the reference is to real horses or to statues.

the horses that the kings who ruled Judah had dedicated/consecrated for ⌊ceremonies honoring⌋ the sun.

-or-

the horses that the ⌊earlier/previous⌋ kings of Judah had set aside for ⌊the worship of⌋ the sun ⌊god⌋ .

23:11c They were in the court near the chamber of an official named Nathan-melech.

The Hebrew word that the Berean Standard Bible translates as “official” is literally “eunuch.” The term had probably come to be used in a general way for any court official.

They were ⌊kept⌋ in the court beside/by the room of an official called Nathan-Melek.

-or-

The horses had been/stayed in the courtyard near the room where Nathan-Melek the court official ⌊lived⌋ .

23:11d And Josiah burned up the chariots of the sun.

Josiah burned the chariots that were dedicated/consecrated to the sun god.

-or-

King Josiah burned the war carts that were also set aside for ⌊the worship of⌋ the sun.
