SIL Translator’s Notes on 2 Kings 22:19

22:19a because your heart was tender and you humbled yourself before the LORD

‘You (sing.) chose to listen. You (sing.) submitted ⌊to me,⌋ to Yahweh,

-or-

The king repented and lowered himself before Yahweh.

22:19b when you heard what I spoke against this place and against its people,

when you heard what I said I would do to this place and the people here. I said that

-or-

He listened when Yahweh said that he would punish this land and its people/inhabitants. Yahweh said that

22:19c that they would become a desolation and a curse,

they would become a cursed people and the land would become ruins.

-or-

its people will be thought/spoken of as under a curse and their land will lie in ruins.

22:19d and because you have torn your clothes and wept before Me,

But since you (sing.) tore your own clothes and cried in sorrow before me,’

-or-

When he heard this,⌋ the king tore the clothes he was wearing ⌊in sorrow/repentance⌋ and wept before Yahweh.

22:19e I have heard you,’ declares the LORD.

Yahweh says, ‘I have also heard your (sing.) cry/prayer.

-or-

And so Yahweh declares that he has also listened to the king.

22:19a-e (reordered)

Yahweh says, ‘You listened to me when I said that this place and its people will be cursed and laid waste. Then you sincerely repented. You tore your clothes and wept before me. And so I have listened to you too….’
