18:36a But the people remained silent

But the people ⌊of Jerusalem⌋ were silent

But the people ⌊who were listening⌋ kept quiet.

18:36b and did not answer a word,

and they did not say a word,

None of them said anything,

18:36c for Hezekiah had commanded,

because their king had told them,

because Hezekiah their king had given orders that

18:36d “Do not answer him.”

“Do not answer them.”

no one was to answer him.
