SIL Translator’s Notes on 2 Kings 17:2

17:2a And he did evil in the sight of the LORD,

He acted in a way that was evil in the sight of Yahweh.

-or-

Hoshea did not act in a way that pleased Yahweh.

-or-

Yahweh was displeased by what he did.

17:2b but not like the kings of Israel who preceded him.

However, his deeds/actions were not as bad as those of the previous kings of Israel.

-or-

But he was less sinful than the kings who had ruled Israel before him.

-or-

However, Hoshea did less evil that the earlier kings/rulers of Israel had done.
